Dahlia Bouquet

$20.00
Sold Out

Gorgeous and variable dahlias last 5 days in a vase. We boil the stem ends to try to squeeze a little extra time out of this irresistible plant.

Right now dahlias are possibly the most en vogue garden flower, largely thanks to Martha Stewart, the Queen of the Home.

Historically, dahlias are an ancient species that were cultivated by the Aztecs and Toltecs for food and water transportation (they have hollow stems).

Initially they were not well thought of as a cut flower but when a double variety (extra petals) was sent to Europe in the early 19th century plant breeders started experimenting with them. Centuries of experimentation produced the many forms we see them in today and now their place in the garden is secured.

We grow our dahlias under a layer of mulch because even though they’re indispensable to our garden they do require a lot of water. Mulch keeps the watering needs down by as much as a third, especially because we’re in a windy area that dries out the top of the soil.
